siezmograph

Page history last edited by mjwg8 15 years, 4 months ago

Last year i created a siezmograph.  This is a machine that show the seismologists how big of an earthquake it was.  To bulid a siezmograph first you need a board that is big enough to hold the project.  Next you need a 2 by 4 about 7 inches long  and atach it to the board. Next you need another 2 by 4 about 10 inches high that is tightly fasened at the opposite end of the board.  Then you need a L bracket screweed to the top of the 2 by 4 with a pully attached to it.  once you have the board connected to the platform you have to attach a wooden dowl with a pen to the 7 inch piece.  you will need to connect it with a small hing that wont break under stress.  Next you have a spring attached to the wooden dowl and to the small 2 by 4.  This way the pen will bounce up and down when the board is tapped.  Make sure the dowl is long enough to barley touch the tall board on the other end.  next you will need a smaller wooden dowl to hold the spool of papper attach it to either of the sides of the 10 inch board.  and a nail at the other side to hold the spool of papper.  then you put the papper spool on the nail and tape the other end to the the dowl on the other side.  Next you put a spring at the end with the paper so the board can bounce.  Then your done.  You hace to take the pen and put it on the papper then tap down on the end with the spring and the pen will go up and down.  The harder you push on the board the bigger the line will be.
