For my project I tested to see which method is the best to remove oil (olive oil) from water. Scince there has been many oil spills, I though it was a very appropriate time to do this project. The three methods I did was scooping (spoon), straining (cheesecloth), and absorbing (absorbing pelletsand kitty litter). My hypothesis was the absorbing pellets would take out the most oil, but will take more time. My procedure is to put 3 oz of olive oil in a bowl with one cup of water. Test each method three times. Then, see how much oil was removed. My data analysis is to find the percentage of oil removed will be used with a data table. The scooping only absorbed about ten percent. It was hard to seperate the oil from the water because the oil floats above the water. The next method I tested was the cheesecloth. It got about 85% of the oil out of the water. The next method I tested was the absorbing pellets. My hypothesis was incorrect because it only absorbed about 15% of the oil. The next absorbing method I tested was cat litter. It was a non-selective material so which ever substance it touched first it would absorb it. The first time I tested it, I put it directly on the oil and it absorbed all of it. The second time I tested it, I put it on the side and absorbed the water. My conclusion was that the cat litter was the best method.
